What is a critical lens?
A critical analysis is a piece of writing which is written about a particular text. In focuses on the writer's opinion or evaluation of a text. Analyzing it means that you break it down and look at it in depth and pull it apart and study it. Writing this you are interpreting it from a specific perspective.

Type of Lenses
- Psychological criticism - this examines the psychological motivations of characters as a way to find meaning in a text.
- Biographical criticism - examines the life of the author as a way to find meaning in the text.
- Historical criticism - examines historical events (happening at the time of the text’s creation or earlier) as a way to find meaning in the text.
- Rhetorical criticism - the examination of how a text serves as social action. The aim is to persuade its readers of a certain stance on an issue.
- Cultural Criticism - is a way of looking at a text as a product of the larger cultural attitudes (of race, gender, class, sexuality, etc.) in which it is created. It is often concerned with questions of power in social structures.
- Feminist criticism - is a way of looking at a text for its messages regarding the treatment of women within a patriarchal (male-privileged) social structure.
- Economic (or Marxist) - criticism is a way of looking at a text as a commentary on economic or class structures.
- Race criticism - is a way of looking at a text for its messages regarding treatment of racial/ethnic minorities within the culture
Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud is the author of the structural model of personality. His theory explains that each persons personality is made of three parts. These include the Id, Superego and Ego.
The Id is the part of our personality which has our primitive impulses. For example thirst, anger and desires. It represents our unconscious and repressed thoughts. The Id wants what feels good at the time. The thought and consideration of other circumstances isn't found to be important. The devil on the shoulder is sometimes used as a representation of the Id.
The Superego is the part of the personality conscience. Its the moral part of us. This is due to our ethical and moral restraints due to how our knowledge of eg. what is right and what is wrong or moral and immoral things. The angel that sits on someones shoulder is usually the representation of the superego.
The Ego is the part which maintains the balance between our Id which are our impulses and our Superego which is our conscience . It is a representation of our conscious. The person usually faced with having to decide between the Id (devil) and the Superego (angle) represents the Ego.
